As I am reading All the Kings Men I have noticed that Warren has shifted his perception of society from good to bad. This goes along with the progression of the story line, going deeper and deeper in to the corruption caused by politics. I do not believe that this direct relationship is coincidental. As Wee find out more about how characters are tainted and intertwined by scandal and corruption Warrens views of man and society experience a transition.   As the novel progresses there is a clear shift in Warren’s perception of man and society. His views degrade from being optimistic to very cynical and negative.  What were once seemingly good intentions are now clouded by deception. There are numerous quotations to evidence this idea but i specifically liked one involving Willie and the hospital. Willie evidences this when speaking about building the hospital, “ ‘I’m going to build me the god-damndest, biggest, chromium-platedest, formaldhyde-stinkingest free hospital and health center the All-Father let live.” (Warren 209) Willie describes this enormous hospital he intends to build with much anticipation. However  this scene in the novel reveals that his intentions are no longer good. Willie only announces he wants build a hospital only after he is nearly impeached by Macmurfee and his men. The hospital is a way for Willie to up his image and restore his perfect reputation. He uses it as a tool, or political strategy to regain his perfect name. Thus, Willie does not want to build the hospital for the benefit of the people. Everything he does now is working toward getting ahead in the political race, his intentions no longer purely to benefit society but to achieve personal gain. Through this scene Warren displays that on the surface actions may seem to be an act that will benefit society however, this can be deceiving and give a false impression of a person’s actual intentions. Once one gives up their concern for society as a whole they focus solely on themselves. This clouds their intentions and they develop a tunnel vision that only allows them to see what will benefit them personally. This is what is happening to Willie. Politics has thoroughly  corrupted him. A persons true intentions reflect their morals and ideals. Thus what a person stands for, this can transfer in to the debate about whether Willie is good or evil... If his intentions are indeed no longer pure and are deceptive this stands for who he is. meaning that Warren may in fact be trying to symbolize a transition in Willie as well. I don’t know I think it can be argued that Willie is good and bad. But I will leave that for the next blog!
